ow clearly I recall the cool embrace of the General's house as I stepped into its gracious Entrance Hall! Long and narrow, the hall stretched from front door to back. Since the doors at either end provided welcome cross-ventilation, the space was often the site of dancing whenever the General would throw one of the fine balls which he called "regales." And even when not filled with dancers, I reckon that the General's corridor was just as elegant then as it is now; decorated with such niceties as the American Empire card table, the American Rococo Revival mirror and the early 19th century painted bust of George Washington which you will see when you visit the residence.
