s she was a relative latecomer to our little world, the General's second wife, Mary Hollister, developed a somewhat more formal relationship with me. As a result, I would not have been among that circle of intimates whom she would have welcomed into the bedroom from which she oversaw the household. I was in possession of a strong back, however, and thus was admitted into the room while helping to deliver the second Mrs. Banning's beautiful Renaissance Revival armoire. For, although the room performed the very intimate function of providing the General's wife with a place to slumber, it also served as a place to which servants and close friends would call. Perhaps that is why the room's rich mahogany bed bore pineapples -- a symbol of welcome -- upon their bedposts.
