 is a pity the General did not share in any of the pleasant evenings which his family and I passed together in this gracious Family Room. Originally a pair of guest rooms in the General's day, his resourceful children transformed it into a place for family and friends to gather. Crowded with ornaments and possessions in the Victorian style, the room exuded as much congeniality and cheer in its day as it does now, particularly when a fire danced beneath the hand-carved mantel, and when the crackling of the fire was joined by the sounds of songbirds or music, played perhaps on Hancock's horn, or on the family room's fine piano.
