lay a role in preserving southern California's heritage by joining the Museum's Interpreter Program. Starting with a weekly 12-session course which offers a survey of 19th century California, its history, economy, politics, arts and architecture, the program will teach you what you need to know to become an expert Interpreter. As an Interpreter, you will be qualified to introduce visitors to the whole range of the Museum's programs -- from special events, lecture and discussion programs, to the study of California's history, culture and personalities. Interpreters offer guided tours of the residence and stagecoach barn. They help to lead the Museum's school program, 1880's Day, which introduces fourth grade students to the region's cultural and historical heritage.
As qualified Interpreters, you are entitled to:
- Lead tours through the Banning Residence Museum
- Instruct school children in the Museum's 1880's Day program
- Help to put on the Museums special activities and programs
- Take part in continuing education, lectures, field trips and workshops
- Apply to join one of the Museum's several committees, once you have served as an Interpreter for six months.
To become an Interpreter, you must:
- Successfully complete the Interpreter Training Course
- Join the Friends of Banning Museum, paying the annual dues of $25.00
- Deposit $15.00 toward the cost of training materials, which is refundable upon graduation
- Attend Banning Residence Museum Volunteers' Meetings
- Make a commitment to serve two afternoons per month (or six afternoons per quarter) as an Interpreter or School Program Interpreter for two years after receiving your training
- To become an Interpreter, email your contact information to us or phone the museum at: (310) 548-7777.
